Running at Newtown

Newtown High School is a long history of producing some of the best runners in New York City. Our school offers cross country in the Fall season, indoor track in the Winter season, and track & field in the Spring season.

Cross country is trail running. We compete at Cunningham Park and Van Cortlandt Park. Freshmen run 1.5 miles. Sophomores run 2.5 miles or 5k (3.1 miles). Juniors, Seniors, and Varsity runners run 5k (3.1 miles).

During the winter we transition to running indoors. We compete at The Armory, a world famous indoor track, known as the fastest indoor track in the world. College, professional and Olympic athletes all run at The Armory. Events vary from the 55m dash to the 3,200m (2 miles) race with select field events (55m Hurdles, long jump, high jump, triple jump, pole vault).

In the Spring we return to the outdoors, running on our very own track. We are a fortunate New York City public school that has their very own track and field space just three blocks away. We host two races per season, inviting every Queens team to compete in our lanes. Events vary from 100m to 3,200m (2 miles) and field events including steeplechase (an event with a lot of Newtown pride). Other field events include: shot put, discus, javelin, pole vault, high jump, long jump, triple jump, 100m hurdles, 400m hurdles)
