Attendance Matters: Small Absences Can Have a Big Impact

At Newtown High School, we encourage students and families to recognize the importance of consistent attendance. Every day in school provides valuable opportunities for learning, collaboration, and personal growth.

The impact of missed school days can be greater than many realize. Missing just two days of school each month can result in approximately 20 missed days over the course of a school year. Over time, those absences can add up to dozens of hours of missed instruction in core subjects such as mathematics, reading, and writing.

As absences increase, students may find it more difficult to stay on track with coursework, participate in class activities, and maintain academic progress. Missing four days per month can result in twice as much missed instructional time, creating even greater challenges.

Regular attendance supports academic achievement, strengthens study habits, and helps students stay connected to their teachers, classmates, and school community. By making attendance a priority, students give themselves the best opportunity to succeed both in school and beyond.

Every day counts. Being present today helps build success for tomorrow.
