Welcome to the Music Department page!
Currently we are offering two courses at Newtown, and in the process of expanding
- Core Music
- Mixed Ensemble
Core Music:
Basic knowledge of the fundamentals of music and music notation. Students learn the basic elements of pitch, rhythm, notation, scale structure, tonality, intervals, chords, melody, harmony, musical terminology, and score reading. Students apply these concepts to writing and analyzing simple musical examples. Students will also play the guitar, and have the option to play other instruments such as violin, piano, saxophone etc.
Mixed Ensemble:
Mixed Ensemble is a class where you can choose the instrument you wish to play. Students have the choice of guitar, piano, ukulele, electric bass, violin, flute etc.
Learn the fundamental skills of guitar playing, including simple cording, basic strumming beginning note reading and music theory.
The main objective of this course is to understand the fundamentals of making music in an ensemble. You will learn how to read music, play chords on the guitar, read music on the guitar and basic rhythm patterns and basic theory.

Concert Band:
Concert Band is a ensemble where students can choose from instruments such as flutes, clarinet, saxophones, as well as trumpets, trombones, tubas and percussion instruments. This class focuses on learning a new instrument and becoming familiar with making music with your peers.
Chorus:
Learn the fundamentals of singing techniques and musicianship, utilizing music theory and performance skills through a wide variety of traditional and contemporary music.
Enjoy the opportunity to perform in public.
Music Department Clubs
Music Society:
Music Society is a club that welcomes all students. Come make music, listen to music, learn a new instrument, dance, or just hang out with friends. Music Society is a club where you can enjoy yourself as well as learn new instruments such a piano, guitar, electric guitar, bass or anything of your choice. We have concerts throughout the year to show off the talent of our Newtown Students. Check below for photos and videos of our club.
