English Department

The Newtown English Department has a wide range of College level courses, interesting electives and after-school tutoring proven to increase Regents and SAT scores! Our classes focus on literature and non-fiction writing from a pool of prolific multicultural authors. The AP English 11 Composition class prepares students for college level writing and analysis. The AP English 12 Literature class prepares students for college level literary analysis and comparison. We offer the following two electives of “Heroes in Film” and “Mythology” for high performing students who are interested in exploring the arts outside of the core classes. Mondays through Thursdays there is tutoring offered from 3:30-5:50 for students to prepare for the ELA Common Core Regents and the SATs. Our teachers also host numerous after school enrichment programs such as The Drama Club, The Newspaper Club, The Comic-Con Club, The Book Club, and Short Stories. The Drama club produces two amazing plays per year that has helped students receive awards and internships for college. Many of of these clubs offer students a fun outlet and opportunity for creative expression in the arts and has the potential to provide students with leadership roles that are beneficial to their college resumes.
