Historical Thinking Skills

The Social Studies Department at Newtown High School is focusing on a new initiative building upon students’ academic vocabulary. These academic vocabulary terms will be displayed in the Social Studies classrooms and teachers will be using these vocabulary terms during class discussions, class assignments, homework assignments and assessments. These academic vocabulary terms are aligned with the K-12 New York State Social Studies Framework and will be seen commonly on state assessments, including the Global History and Geography II and United States History and Government Regents Exams, which students are required to complete during high school. To help with students becoming more familiar with these academic vocabulary terms, it would be helpful to include these academic vocabulary terms during discussion with your children. The extra awareness of these important vocabulary terms will assist students with better comprehension, analysis, understanding, and mastery of the Social Studies curriculum.
